In 2012, a woman contacted me through Color Bakery (www.colorbakery.com, my custom tile store) and said she had a special design request. On the phone, she told me that she was the aunt of a very young and special girl who had suddenly died in an accident. Her death had devastated the family; Anastasia had been a vibrant and powerful light. Her aunt told me that she wanted to give Anastasia's parents something special and meaningful, a piece of art that would give them comfort. She told me Anastasia loved ostriches, she had a thing for them. She would joke around that they could fly, they only did it when nobody was looking. That was Anastasia, she told me, always expecting the impossible like it happened every day. I created this piece for her. My client loved it, she told me it brought her and Anastasia's parents to tears, but happy tears.
